Where Can I Find Sample Boxes?
In North Carolina, soil sample boxes and submission forms are available at any Cooperative Extension office. You can also create an online account to submit and pay for samples digitally and view your results through the NCDA&CS online portal, PALS. Find your local NCSU Extension Office
How Do I Submit Samples?
Soil samples go to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Agronomic Division lab in Raleigh. The lab’s address is printed on the soil sample box and submission form. You can download a submission form for home lawn and garden samples or pick one up at your local extension office. Many county extension offices will also carry samples to the lab for you as a courtesy, though timing varies by county. Soil sample submission forms
What Does It Cost?
Free Testing: Soil tests are free for N.C. residents from April 1 through November 30, 2026.
Peak Season Fee: A $5 per sample fee applies to samples that arrive at the lab on or after December 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027.
Timing matters: to test for free, your samples must physically arrive at the lab in Raleigh by 5:00 PM on November 30. Mailing them or dropping them at your extension office before that date does not count. If you are cutting it close, deliver them in person or allow plenty of time.
North Carolina is one of the few states offering soil testing at no direct cost to residents for most of the year, thanks to funding from a statewide commercial fertilizer tax.
